- Netflix remains the revenue winner despite losing up to 4 million North American customers in 2022.
Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) is steadily increasing in the modern age. A key reason was the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown which restricted people to their homes. As a result, there was a high demand for streaming services to provide quality content for individuals to enjoy.
According to the Global SVOD Forecast 2022, it predicted that between 2021 and 2027, the number of SVOD subscribers would increase by 475 million users. This increase will total the SVOD subscribers to about 1.7 billion by 2027.
Many platforms are providing Subscription-based Video on Demand for global users. However, US-based platforms are leading in delivering quality entertainment to international subscribers. They include Netflix, Disney+, HBO, Amazon, Apple TV, Paramount+, and many others. Further research provided by Digital TV forecast that six US-based platforms will dominate up to 50% of the world’s total subscribers in 2027.
Simon Murray, a principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, explained that Disney+ (with 274 million subscribers) will overtake Netflix (253 million subscribers) in 2027. When discussing the revenues of this platform, he explained: “SVOD revenues for Disney+ will reach $15 billion by 2027. Despite lowering our forecasts by 67 million subscribers, SVOD revenues for Disney+ will be the same in 2027 as our previous forecast.”

Potential Revenues of Top US-based SVOD platforms
In the forecast, Netflix will add 31 million subscribers between 2021 and 2027, despite losing only 4 million subscribers in North America. Simon Murray explained this drop in subscribers on the Netflix Platform: “Our Netflix forecasts for 2027 are 29 million lower than our February update – at 253 million. To counter its fresher and cheaper rivals, Netflix needs to boost its content.”
Still, the future of Netflix is sure as they remain the revenue winner based on the forecast. Netflix’s revenue is predicted to reach $34 billion by 2027. This potential revenue of Netflix combines Disney+, HBO max, and Paramount+.
Disney+ is steadily gaining ground as a direct competing firm with Netflix. The SVOD forecasts reveal that Disney+ will overtake Netflix in 2025. In addition, Disney+ will add 144 million subscribers between 2021 and 2027 totaling 274 million Disney+ subscribers.
The following years will show the potential of Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) platforms. The current aim of these SVOD platforms is to outperform each other in delivering top-notch entertainment to their subscribers’ doorsteps.
